There are books we read, books we enjoy, and then there are books whose stories quietly remain with us long after the last page has been turned. Bindu Unnikrishnan’s Sonarelle: Stories That Echo belongs to the latter.
A collection of thirty stories, Sonarelle journeys across a remarkable emotional landscape. Instead, it allows the reader to experience the many shades of being human—sometimes with a smile, sometimes with a lingering sadness, and often with something to think about.
One of the strengths of Bindu Unnikrishnan’s writing is her ability to weave contemporary concerns into her storytelling without making the narratives feel forced. Her stories remain rooted in human emotions while gently drawing attention to issues that matter.
“Of Eyes and Lips” is particularly striking in this regard. Centred around a girl born with a cleft lip, the story moves beyond physical appearance to explore love, acceptance and the deeper meaning of seeing and being seen. It reminds us that true affection is not always about perfection as defined by society, but about accepting another person in their entirety.
Among my personal favourites are “Miss Ratna’s Magical Bag,” “The Happiness Cactus,” and “A Light of Her Own.” Each story possesses a distinct emotional flavour, reflecting the versatility of the author and her ability to create characters and situations that invite the reader into their worlds.
What makes Sonarelle especially interesting is its thoughtful division into five segments, each exploring a different theme or emotional territory. This structure gives the collection a sense of movement, almost like travelling through different chambers of the human heart. Every section brings a new atmosphere, yet the underlying thread remains the same—the complexities of life and the emotions that connect us all.
The beauty of the collection lies not merely in the stories themselves, but in what they leave behind. Some stories entertain, some provoke thought, some tug gently at the heart, while others encourage us to look at familiar realities through a different lens.
The final section, Endings That Begin Again, beautifully reinforces one of the book's underlying messages—that an ending is not always an ending. Stories such as In Every Life, In Every Way, The Sunday Breakfast and The Personal Diary remind us that life often has a way of opening new doors after moments of closure.
What makes Sonarelle special is its ability to move between genres and emotions without losing its warmth. The writing invites readers to feel rather than simply read. There are stories that entertain, stories that surprise, and stories that quietly stay with you after the book is closed.
Sonarelle – Stories That Echo is therefore more than just a collection of thirty short stories. It is a celebration of memories, relationships, choices, dreams, resilience and the countless emotions that make us human—a beautifully woven tapestry of words that leaves something behind in the reader, long after the final page has been turned.
And when the book finally closes, the stories do not necessarily end.
They echo.
