8)Jaya Pillai

Jaya Pillai was born and raised in Kolkata, a city pulsating with culture, art, and literary heritage. More than just her hometown, Kolkata shaped her worldview and quietly guided the choices she would make in life. While her roots trace back to Kerala, her connection with the southern state deepened with time—an influence that finds a strong presence in her debut book, Afternoons and More (2022). A teacher by profession, Jaya’s journey into education was not a planned one. In her early years, she explored paths far removed from teaching, including fashion designing. Yet, she soon realised that education flowed naturally through her veins. After completing her B.Ed., she embarked on a fulfilling teaching career that continues to bring her joy and purpose. Alongside her academic pursuits, writing remained a quiet companion—words always came easily to her, nurtured by her childhood love for books. Her literary journey began early. In Class 5, her poem Raindrops was published in the children’s section of The Statesman, marking her first major achievement. During her college years, she went on to win first place in an Eastern India essay-writing competition—an accomplishment that meant the world to her. As professional responsibilities grew, writing took a back seat, limited mostly to scripting school plays. However, life intervened in 2016 when illness compelled her to take a four-month sabbatical. This pause rekindled her creative spirit. She began writing actively on digital platforms, and her very first story, And Life Moves On, won a contest and was published in the anthology Written on the Stars. Around the same time, her poem Rumours appeared in Melodies of Spring.

What followed was a prolific phase. Her stories The Law of the Jungle and From Darkness to Dawn were published by ArtoonsInn in Hawk’s Flight and Hawk’s Nest. She continued contributing to numerous reputed anthologies and journals, including works such as It Is Summer in India, The Purple Grave, From Dust It Rose, Nemesis, The Triumph of the Queen, and Remorse, among many others published by platforms like Chrysanthemum Chronicles, The Hive, The Archaic House, Asian Literary Society, and Literatureslight.

One of the most significant highlights of her literary career came in 2022 when she won the Women’s Web Orange Flower Award for Humour. In 2023, she was honoured with The Holistic Pine Sahitya Puraskar. Her debut book, Afternoons and More, a unique blend of poems, reflections, life anecdotes, and family recipes, received the Unicorn Award (2022) and was showcased at the Calcutta International Book Fair and Kolkata Literary Carnival in 2023. The book is currently available on Amazon.

For Jaya, writing is a soulful response—a form of catharsis amidst life’s chaos. In those moments of creativity, she finds herself transported into another world. Beyond writing, she enjoys music, cooking, quiet balcony moments, meditation, travel, light-hearted cinema, and reading across genres. She has actively participated in multiple seasons of National Poetry Writing Month, having written nearly 200 poems. In 2025, she took part in Season 5 of the Tale-A-Thon Challenge by Penmancy, producing six poems, four flash fiction pieces, and a novella. Teaching Literature and History, reading, and writing come together seamlessly in her life—making this creative triad a source of enduring joy.
