As news of his death spreads, mourners have begun to gather in St Peter's Square, where a palpable sense of grief envelops the crowd. BBC reporters have observed emotional scenes, with many people visibly moved, expressing their sadness over the Pope's passing.

World leaders are paying tribute to the late Pontiff, with King Charles acknowledging that Pope Francis "profoundly touched the lives of so many." His compassionate approach and commitment to social justice have left an indelible mark on individuals and communities across the globe.

Just a day prior, Pope Francis addressed thousands of worshippers in St Peter's Square, extending Easter greetings and hopes for renewal. His passing follows a recent hospitalization, where he received treatment for an infection over a five-week period. 

The death of Pope Francis initiates the centuries-old process of electing a new Pope, as the Vatican prepares for the transition of leadership in the Roman Catholic Church, marking the end of an impactful papacy characterized by humility and outreach.
